The journey

A powerful wildlife encounter, followed by space to absorb it.

Gorilla trekking often deserves more than a quick in-and-out route. This itinerary arrives in Volcanoes National Park with time to settle, keeps the afternoon after your trek unscheduled, and then moves to Lake Kivu for a gentler close to the journey.

It works beautifully for a honeymoon, anniversary or a private escape with limited time. We can raise the level of accommodation, add a second gorilla trek or build in an extra Kigali night if the flights or your preferred pace call for it.

Day by day

A calm five-day rhythm.

We leave room for the trek to be the emotional centre of the journey, not one item among too many.

Day 01

Arrival in Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes

Meet your private driver-guide on arrival and travel north through Rwanda’s hills toward Volcanoes National Park. The route is scenic, but we keep the day straightforward: a comfortable lunch stop, arrival at the lodge with time to settle, and a quiet evening preparing for the forest experience ahead.

Day 02

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, attend the park briefing and begin your trek with the assigned ranger team. The terrain and duration vary, which is part of the real nature of gorilla trekking. After your time with the gorillas, return to the lodge for lunch, a restorative afternoon and an unhurried dinner in the volcanic landscape.

Day 03

Volcanoes to Lake Kivu: forest to water

Today’s private drive shifts the landscape from volcanic foothills to the shores of Lake Kivu. Arrive at your chosen hotel or lodge with the afternoon open for the pool, a lakeside walk or simply a slower rhythm after the trek. The point of this transition is not to add another checklist item, but to give the journey a graceful change of pace.

Day 04

Lake Kivu at your own pace

Keep today flexible. You may choose a private boat excursion, a gentle coffee or community visit, kayaking, or a day mostly spent enjoying the property. For couples and families, this adaptable day makes the short itinerary feel complete rather than compressed. We will suggest the right balance once we know your interests and lodge choice.

Day 05

Lake Kivu to Kigali: onward travel

After breakfast, return privately to Kigali for your departure flight or an onward connection. If timing allows, we can add a considered Kigali lunch or extend the route into Nyungwe Forest, Akagera or a longer East Africa safari.

Before you decide

Useful answers for a short Rwanda itinerary.

Will five days feel too short for Rwanda?

Five days is a strong choice when gorilla trekking is your main priority and you prefer quality over covering every region. For Nyungwe or Akagera, we recommend adding more time.

Can I add a second gorilla trek?

Yes, subject to permit availability. We can add a Volcanoes night and keep Lake Kivu in the route, or shape a more forest-focused stay.

Is Lake Kivu a beach extension?

It is a peaceful freshwater lakeside stay, not a traditional beach destination. It adds calm, scenery and recovery time after the trekking experience.
